The first black leader of the Airmen of Note, the premier jazz ensemble of the United States Air Force, Ernie Hensley lived a life of constant contrast between professional highs and personal lows. To tell his story, we took inspiration from mid-century jazz album artwork to create fractured modernistic compositions that juxtapose bold colors and rhythmic typography with historical imagery of the legendary musicians with whom Ernie performed. The book visually explores how Ernie’s life was much like the modern jazz he loved to play—chaotically beautiful.
